A pōhaku kuʻi ʻai is the traditional stone tool used to pound kalo into poi. After kalo is cooked, it’s placed on a wooden papa kuʻi ʻai (pounding board). The pōhaku kuʻi ʻai is then used to break it down and mash it until it becomes the smooth consistency we know as poi.
