Mt. Cuba’s trillium collection is an iconic part of our gardens and heritage. It takes 5 to 7 years after germinating for these beautiful native woodland plants to bloom, so propagating trillium is a lengthy process. Check out this video of our conservation propagator, Claire, removing trillium rhizomes from storage and transplanting them into raised beds. Be sure to visit Mt. Cuba Center in mid to late April to see our terrific trillium collection in bloom! | Mt. Cuba Center

Our weekly #naturalnourishment series continues with the Trial Garden. Here, we conduct research on native plants to determine what grows best in the mid-Atlantic region, then share the information with gardeners, nurseries, and breeders. Follow the link to learn more about our recent trials, and what might work in your garden. Stay tuned throughout the week as we share trial results, top performing plants, how we watch pollinators, and more. https://mtcubacenter.org/research/trial-garden/ | Mt.

The tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) is a fast-growing tree that can reach heights up to nearly 200’, making it the tallest deciduous tree in temperate North America. This native tree grows rapidly for decades with straight, unbranched trunks that can create cathedral-like columns when trees are present together. You can see this effect right here at Mt. Cuba when walking along the Woods Path, as in this video. More often growing 90-120’ tall, this species needs a large area to grow and does

A massive planting to reforest an area at Mt. Cuba! Thank you to the 30 volunteers who helped us put 600 native trees and shrubs in the ground. The floodplain plant species were spaced 8-9 feet apart, watered-in and then protected with circular wire fencing. Shrub clusters at the front edge will build a thick native edge to the area being reforested. | Mt. Cuba Center

Which native plants are best for the garden? The Trial Garden at Mt. Cuba Center has the answers! Kyle from Native Habitat Project and I had fun exploring the numerous species, cultivars, and ecotypes planted here. These varieties are evaluated for their performance and ecological value in various settings. After several years of assessment, the researchers at Mt. Cuba Center release very detailed reports with these data, helping to inform home gardeners and landscapers alike! If you’re in the M

New Trial Garden alert! We just finished planting Mt Cuba Center’s newest evaluation on Pycnanthemum, also known as mountain mints. While this planting is new to our gardens, the Conservation and Research Team has been hard at work for the last three years planning, collecting seed, and growing these plants in our greenhouses to make this new trial a reality. Over the next four years we will be collecting data on their ornamental qualities and ability to attract pollinators. The evaluation inclu

🌳 Take a peek into a day in the life of a Mt. Cuba arborist! Here you can watch our arboriculture intern climb a tulip tree along our Woods Path. Using a motorized ascender called the Wraptor, she zips up to around 75-80 feet in the air. After taking in the view, it’s time to work! Small shoots called water sprouts are trimmed off the trunk of the tree to promote crown growth and improve aesthetics. | Mt. Cuba Center

Now on to #NaturalNourishment from our Trillium Path. Home to one of our Core Collections, the Trillium Garden houses a genus very dear to Mrs. Copeland’s heart. The trillium collection supports education and research, which contributes to their conservation in the wild. Our trillium collection dates to the 1960s and contains most trillium species native to the eastern United States. In 2002, Mt. Cuba Center's trilliums were granted a Nationally Accredited Plant Collection™ status by the Plant C

The first leg of our virtual garden tour starts on the Woods Path. First cut in 1968, this path prominently features tulip trees (Liriodendron tulipifera) which have had their lower limbs removed to create a cathedral-like effect. Looking upward halfway down the path (01:25) is awe-inspiring in any season. Carpeting the forest floor along the path is a variety of spring ephemerals - these are plants that emerge, bloom, and die back (a.k.a., senesce) in early spring, before the canopy leafs out a
