Genoa Keawe was born on October 31, 1918 in O'ahu, Hawaiʻi. She grew up singing in her Mormon Church choir, where her love for singing first started. Her professional career began in 1939, singing for bandstand shows in Kailua. Before World War II, she also sang at officers clubs and other military clubs with the George Hookano Dance Band.
