Another flashback to the beaver pond in 2020. I was very fortunate to film one of the adult beavers adding mud and sticks to the lodge in the fall of 2020. This activity served the dual purposes of deepening the pond before winter freeze-up, and insulating the lodge for the cold prairie winter. It is pretty rare to get such an up-close look at this kind of beaver behaviour in broad daylight, but the Meewasin beaver pond was a magical place for watching beavers. A beaver getting ready for winter! Last week, just after sunset, I caught a quick video of Georgette adding some wet mud to the top of her lodge. In the fall, beavers in cold climates spend a lot of time adding an extra mud to their lodge because it serves as insulation to help keep the inside of their lodge warm when the outside temperatures are cold.
