A Christmas favorite, "Stille Nacht,” or Silent Night, was first performed on Christmas Eve 1818. The story has it that Father Joseph Mohr had written the lyrics as a poem 2 years prior. Father Mohr asked the schoolmaster Franz Xaver Gruber to write a melody and a guitar accompaniment for evening mass. Why a guitar accompaniment? It is reported that a flood from a rising river had damaged the church’s organ. Repeated flooding eventually destroyed the “Silent Night Chapel,” but the hymn lives on
