The Sacramento Historic City Cemetery contains the gravesites of the city’s earliest inhabitants. One of those buried at the cemetery is Nelson Ray. Nelson was born into slavery and came to California during the Gold Rush. He was able to mine for enough gold to secure the freedom of his wife and some of his children. He will later reunite with other family in Sacramento. The life of Nelson Ray is an inspiring story that also helps represent the Black experience in California during the Gold Rush

While people throughout California made their way to the Sacramento Valley during the early days of the Gold Rush, across the continent on July 19. 1848, a group of 300 people met in Seneca Falls, New York to hold a convention. On February 25, 1854, Sacramento became the State Capital of California. Previously, Monterey, San Jose, Vallejo, and Benicia served as capitals. In honor of today, Jared discussed the history of California’s capitals while letterpress printing an electrotype (copy of a woodcut) of our State Capitol building today.
