Apr 1, 2020 — So I ran into a little problem when connecting my LG UltraFine display to a Windows PC via USB-C. When starting the PC up the display sometimes doesn't show a picture at all and some other times the pictures isn't sharp at all. But I don't know why this happens. When connecting it to BootCamp everything works.

To get 5K 60 Hz with the new or old LG UltraFine 5K you need a Thunderbolt 3 connection that has two DisplayPort 1.2 signals from the GPU. The LG UltraFine 5K display uses two tiles of 2560x2880. Mar 24, 2020 — 27MD5KA is the old LG UltraFine 5K which only works with Thunderbolt. 27MD5KL is the current LG UltraFine 5K display sold by Apple which works with Thunderbolt (5K) and USB-C (4K). You'll need a Thunderbolt 3 add-in card if you want to use the 27MD5KA. The add-in card should have two DisplayPort inputs to support 5K.

Mar 24, 2020 — It appears that there are extra DisplayPort connections so a display like LG UltraFine 5K can be connected without reducing the number of displays that can be connected by more than 1. If you can connect three LG UltraFine 5K to the M1 Max at full 5K60, then it would mean that it has 6 or 7 DisplayPort connections.

Mar 24, 2020 — If both LG UltraFine 5K displays were connecting properly, then you should be able to change the audio between each one (each display has it's own USB audio device). I guess this would be a lot easier with the newer LG UltraFine 5K displays because you can use a DisplayPort connection instead of Thunderbolt to force a single DisplayPort connection.

Mar 24, 2020 — The LG UltraFine 5K 27MD5KL has a 4K timing that is neither HDMI nor CVT-RB: [email protected] 133.319kHz 522.61MHz h(8 32 40 +) v(1 8 53 -) You should test the LG UltraFine 5K with an Intel Mac's DisplayPort output to see if it can support arbitrary 4K timings/refresh rates - especially the standard CVT-RB timing and the HDMI timing.
