The Office of Personnel Management, which manages the federal civil service, is defending its bid for staffers to resign.

The email is the most sweeping effort yet by the new Trump administration to shrink the ranks of government employees.

At least 20,000 federal employees have reportedly accepted the Trump administration’s deferred resignation offer, totaling about 1% of the federal workforce. Last week, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management sent an email to nearly 2.

Staffers would be paid for eight months if they resign rather than return to the office full time.

The taunt was part of another White House email urging federal employees to accept a "deferred resignation" offer.

The Trump administration issued an email blast on Jan. 28 giving most of the country’s 2.3 million eligible employees federal workers the option to resign with pay through Sept. 30. The deadline to decide on whether to accept the offer is Thursday.
