Another massive winter storm is forecast to pummel the southern and eastern U.S., with impacts from Texas to the Carolinas.

A low-pressure system is moving across the country, delivering rain, snow, and ice to much of the southeast. This same system will be making its way along the east coast early this weekend, bringing a chance for accumulating snow to the tri-state.

Brutal cold will open the door for a winter storm to take a somewhat unusual track through the South and create treacherous conditions.

“Mainly a wet snow, maybe some sleet, but mostly frozen. But that’s going to lead to accumulations to 2-3, isolated 4-inch totals or higher in the higher peaks of the North Georgia mountains,” Nitz said. Most of the metro area will see a combination of wintery weather on Friday.

Kansas City International Airport, for example, has an 85% chance of snowfall exceeding .1 of an inch, according to data from the weather service. The probability of higher snowfall totals drops rapidly, with only a 50% chance of snowfall exceeding 1 inch. The chance of 2 inches or more of snow is less than 10%.

The Boston 25 Weather team is continuing to track a winter storm system that could bring snow to Massachusetts on Saturday. FOX 29's Weather Authority is tracking another winter system that could bring more flakes to the Philadelphia area just days after its first significant snowfall this winter.

Areas in the north Georgia mountains will see between 3-6 inches of snow with locally higher amounts possible farther north into the mountains. Snowfall totals of 1-2 inches will be common around I-20 with 0.1-0.25 inch of ice possible. The northern suburbs in metro Atlanta will see between 2-3 inches of snow.
