German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Lithuania this week to inaugurate Berlin's brigade to help protect the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Germany is stationing thousands of troops in Lithuania, the first time it's put soldiers in another country on a long-term basis since World War II.
