A former Ohio Fire Administrator will spend time in jail after he started dozens of arson fires in a national forest.

The layoffs come one day after the deadline for the Trump administration’s “Fork in the Road” program, which encouraged employees to resign but stay on the government payroll through September. It’s not yet clear how many USDA employees accepted the deferred resignation option.

A mass firing of probationary federal government employees has been ordered by the Trump administration, potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of workers including 3,400 with the U.S. Forest Service — nearly 10% of its workforce — who are being terminated,
