The official detour takes drivers heading east on I-40 up Interstate 26 at Asheville, North Carolina, to Johnson City, Tennessee, and then south down Interstate 81 back to I-40.
I-40 is closed in Cocke County, Tennessee. To bypass I-40, drivers should take I-81 and I-26. A rockslide and flooding happened on I-40 in East Tennessee near the North Carolina state line.
Flooding and a rockslide have closed I-40 near the Tennessee-North Carolina border. Repairs could take at least two weeks, but no injuries were reported.
