Samsung has now confirmed the feared bad news for millions of Galaxy users, as they fall further and further behind Google’s Pixel and other Android devices, to say nothing of Apple’s iPhone, its arch rival in the premium smartphone category. For those who have paid $1000-plus for a new flagship, this will come as a nasty surprise.

If you have an older Samsung Galaxy smartphone, you may want to hold off on the latest software update. 9to5Google reported that the update that has been rolling out from Samsung over the past few days is bricking devices from the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series of phones.

It's a problem that may be familiar to some Galaxy S10 owners. Samsung also released an update that broke the phone back in 2019 where users were asked to enter a PIN even though they never made one. Entering any PIN would cause the phone to reboot and ask for the PIN again. Similarly, the only fix was a factory reset.

On Wednesday, numerous people online started complaining about their Samsung phones being stuck in a bootloop (you can see examples here, here, and in newer comments here ). A Samsung spokesperson confirmed to Ars Technica that an update to Samsung’s SmartThings Framework app for managing smart devices caused the problems: We are aware that a limited number of Galaxy smartphones running on Android 12 are rebooting continuously during an update to the latest version of the SmartThings app.
