Thousands of pagers exploded across Lebanon yesterday - reports say Israel's spy agency, Mossad, was targeting Hezbollah fighters.

A wave of deadly explosions across Lebanon and parts of Syria has targeted Hezbollah officials whose handheld pagers have blown up. One security source has described it as "an impressive attack" potentially involving compromised pagers "turned into remote bombs".

A wave of blasts emanating from Hezbollah pagers in Lebanon took place as people shopped for groceries, sat in cafes and drove in cars.

The source of Wednesday’s explosions was not immediately clear but the blasts came a day after thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah blew up across Lebanon.

But Israel rarely takes responsibility for such attacks, and its military declined to comment on the strike in Lebanon.

Hezbollah blamed Israel for the simultaneous blasts that ripped across the Beirut suburbs when the pocket-sized devices exploded.

The powerful Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah continued to strike what it called military targets in northern Israel Thursday after thousands of its members were injured and several killed in what appeared to be an Israeli operation using exploding pagers and other communication devices.
