Jeff Sagarin, a sports computer rankings expert, is still refining his system for evaluating college football teams at 77, despite knowing perfection is impossible.

Alabama football is expected to be at the top of the list in the first set of College Football Playoff rankings Tuesday, Nov. 4. With one loss on its résumé to Florida State, the Crimson Tide has seamlessly navigated through its SEC schedule as one of two teams to have won all of its conference games heading into November.

Under the revised format, the five highest-ranked conference champions are still guaranteed a place in the playoff field, maintaining access for the Group of Six. However, those champions will no longer receive preferential seeding. The bracket will be ordered directly from Nos. 1–12 based on the final rankings.

The ACC is likely a one-bid league, while the Big 12 tiebreakers could either be simple or complicated depending on these final weeks.
