Josh Heupel led Oklahoma to the 2000 national title as a star quarterback while concealing a serious injury to his throwing arm, Brent Venables says.

Josh Heupel played quarterback at Oklahoma from 1999-2000. He led the Sooners to a BCS national championship in 2000, the only national title during Bob Stoops’ tenure as Oklahoma’s head coach (1999-2016).

This will be the first time that Heupel and Venables, who spent plenty of time together at Oklahoma, have faced off on opposing sidelines as head coaches

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables has a long history with the school he now leads as head coach. He began coaching there in 1999 as a co-defensive coordiantor and linebackers coach and held those roles until 2003.
