A man was killed in a “tragic accident” blocks from Ebenezer Baptist Church when an Atlanta Public Works vehicle was clearing an encampment and crushed him to death.

Atlanta plans to stop the clearing of homeless encampments after a man sleeping in his tent was killed by a city Public Works truck trying to sweep the area earlier this month.

The Atlanta City Council voted to change the way it clears homeless camps after the funeral of a homeless man who was killed by a heavy piece of equipment that was clearing an encampment.

On Monday, the Atlanta City Council made notable changes to how the city approaches homelessness and specifically how it conducts encampment clearings.

Close to a hundred people gathered Monday for the funeral of Cornelius Taylor, who died during a homeless encampment sweep in January.

Council voted hours after the family of Cornelius Taylor chanted for change outside City Hall. It's now up to Mayor Andre Dickens to sign or veto the legislation.
