People claiming the U.S. government would revoke the second lady's citizenship did so with a misunderstanding of a January 2025 executive order.

America started doing so at the end of the Civil War. The constitution was amended then to overturn the Dred Scott decision of 1857, which held that black people were not Americans. The 14th Amendment ensured that freed slaves and their children would henceforth be citizens.

“Ending birthright citizenship would require an amendment to the text of the U.S. Constitution, specifically to the 14th Amendment,” said Hiroshi Motomura, an immigration law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. Trump, however, contended that the order does not conflict with the Constitution at all.
