A man impersonating a police officer shot and killed Minnesota state legislator Melissa Hortman and her husband at their home in what Gov. Tim Walz called “targeted political violence.”
The shootings began around 2 a.m. Saturday, when Minnesota State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were both shot multiple times at their home in Champlin, Minnesota, authorities said. Soon after, State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed at their home in Brooklyn Park.
Hortman, a Democrat, and her husband were shot at their home in Brooklyn Park, a city north of Minneapolis, on Saturday morning by a man dressed as a police officer, authorities said. Police are still searching for the suspect, named by the FBI as 57-year-old Vance Boelter, who escaped following a shootout with officers.
Wisconsin Democrats gathered at their state convention under increased security after two lawmakers in neighboring Minnesota were gunned down.
