Social media threats have targeted more than a dozen Pittsburgh-area school districts, resulting in lockdowns, closures and a student facing charges.

A Florida high school student was arrested Friday for allegedly threatening to harm a public official on social media, according to the Orlando Police Department.

The threats aimed at the Deltona school were part of a spike in such cases which prompted a warning to parents from Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood. "This is absolutely out of control and it ends now," Chitwood said at a press conference Friday.
