Junior Alvarado, who rode Sovereignty to victory in last weekend's Kentucky Derby, has been fined $62,000 and suspended two racing days for striking the horse more times than is allowed, horse racing authorities said on Saturday.

Junior Alvarado, the jockey who rode Sovereignty to victory at the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby earlier this month, has been issued a suspension and ordered to pay a hefty fine for excessive use of his riding crop during the race.

Junior Alvarado was given a $62,000 fine and suspended for two upcoming racing days for striking Sovereignty eight times with his riding crop during the Kentucky Derby.
