Hamden native and longtime Red Sox radio voice Joe Castiglione was honored with the prestigious Ford C. Frick Award by the Hall of Fame this past summer. BOSTON — A couple of weeks after learning that he would receive the prestigious 2024 Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting, Joe Castiglione got a call on his cell phone.

Joe Castiglione, the longtime radio voice of the Red Sox for 42 years, announced his retirement on Sunday. At 77, Castiglione announced the news during WEEI's broadcast as the Red Sox batted in the fourth inning against the Yankees.

Hamden native Joe Castiglione, the Red Sox radio voice since 1983, announced on Sunday that will retire after his 42nd season in the booth.

There was a fitting symmetry to Castiglione making his announcement in New York. He was a Yankees fan growing up in Connecticut and admired their famed radio broadcaster, Mel Allen.
