Argentine Mauricio Pochettino was named the successor to Greg Berhalter, who coached the USMNT from 2018 to 2024 and who thoroughly groomed what many consider the best generation of U.S. players. Pochettino suffered his first setback in the Concacaf Nations League in March when Canada eliminated the U.S. in the semifinal.

Naturally, fans also remember the loss in Trinidad that cost the USMNT a spot in the 2018 World Cup. On the bright side, in the four matches between those two T&T victories, the U.S. won all four by a combined score of 22-0.

Hoping to put the damaging friendly defeats over the last week behind them, the U.S. men's national team begin their 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup quest with a group stage game against Trinidad & Tobago on Sunday from San Jose.
