WEBOn Feb. 12, 1970, the Washington Legislature voted to establish the Department of Ecology, and the agency was signed into law on Feb. 23, 1970, by Governor Dan Evans. Five months later, on July 1, 1970, Ecology officially opened its doors to 175 employees, becoming the first government environmental agency in the United States.
