WEBMay 26, 2017 · $8 for a set of 4 is a great buy. It's worth a try. I've got two sets. That british woodworking teacher promotes them as sensible chisels for everyday use. I have several Narex - including the set of imperial mortise chisels and 3 pair of skew chisels, one 2" Irwin, an old 2" Reliance, 2 sets of Aldi, 2 sets of HF wood-handled chisels, etc.

WEBJul 14, 2015 · First a word of caution. Most chisels need to be honed before use, but these are perhaps the dullest chisels I have used right out of the package. If you don't have a way to sharpen, don't expect to use these. I had budgeted some serious time and wear and tear on my stones. After all these are 7 dollar a set chisels sold in a grocery store.

Very sharp and flat out of the box, but I’m looking ahead. I wasn’t sure if this jig forum or the hand tool forum was the best for this question. Thanks.

WEBMar 15, 2012 · Don't need sets of chisels. Which makes buying used a couple of common sizes for dovetails, or paring work; a great option. Only mortise chisels I own are couple of Buck Bros, and 2 Cherries; bought used. Not sorry, but I like Japanese chisel steel the best. Even the cheap white steel in Grizzly chisels is great.

WEBApr 20, 2017 · Generally a name brand chisel has pretty good steel. Stanley is one such brand. I would stay away from Chinese made steel. Old files have been used to make knives, but not good for chisels. High speed steel (HSS) is best for chisels if you want to make your own. It can take a lot of heat from grinding and not lose it s temper. - MrRon

I mean the stuff like you'd find at harbor freight or from china for $1 each. They're nowhere close to unhardened or laminated backing on older tools, which is the danger to CBN. A 55 hardness chisels, even, will do no harm to CBN ...

WEBJan 1, 2010 · The two advantages that the craftsman have are that they are standard and made in the USA. I try to buy only American made tools. The chisels got good costumer reviews on the sears site, but it appears that only one reviewer did any real wood working. I like the looks of the Narex better and the Narex have longer blades.
